Catholic Mingle is a dating site for Catholics. As one might expect, this site is only for heterosexual people, and “vulgar and sexually oriented material is not permitted.” Unlike many other niche sites, this one assumes that all its members are indeed already part of its niche—in other words, all Catholic.
There’s an option for “divorced with annulment” in the profile, as well as a multiple-choice “How important is Catholicism to you?” One of the essay questions is: “What does being Catholic mean to you?”
Free guests can send and receive smiles/e-cards, read the message boards, and can receive instant messages. Premium members can also post to the message boards, initiate instant messages, plus send and receive mingle mail, and chat live with other members.
I interviewed V.M., a 44-year-old hetero woman in TX, who has been a member for about three months. She says, "I joined Catholic Mingle because I feel it is getting harder to meet good, practicing Catholic men who believe in all the teachings of the Church! My least favorite thing is getting cut off when chatting with members! I also don't like that on the profile, they don't have more in depth questions on the views of faith. Example: Do you believe in all theteachings of the Church. These teachings should be written out, and the person should be able to answer beside each one with a yes or a no. I would also like to see if all members that I click on are online at that very moment. I like that you can see who viewed you and send them a smile and an e-card. I would recommend this site to other Catholics. I have met some nice people. There were a few that didn't seem like they had it all upstairs! hehe! I recommend being cautious; don't give out too much info. on yourself too soon and keep praying that the Lord will guide you to the soulmate that HE has handpicked for you!"
R.R., a 32-year-old hetero man in CA, has been a member for about two years, and met his fiancee on Catholic Mingle. He came here because of his "bad experience with secular sites." He says, "People didn't match my values." Here, he had a problem finding people who were serious. "The site does allow for free profiles, so there are a lot of people that are just here. They're not serious." He does, however, enjoy the site's "user-friendly chat room" and message boards. Although he's found a partner, he still comes to the site socially, "Mostly to discuss current events and teaching stuff since there are a lot of teachers here." He also says, "I can get a woman's perspective on things, on the kind of subjects guys don't talk to their girlfriends about."
