Frumster is a pun on "Friendster," taken from the Yiddish word frum, which is another way of saying an Orthodox Jew (usually one raised that way).
I interviewed A.T., a hetero man in his 30s, in Toronto, and A.G., a 27-year-old hetero woman in FL.
Things that A.T. appreciated about the site include the following: "Most of the people are actively looking, people are (by necessity) from a similar background(ish), and everybody knows that Jews are wonderful people. ;-) Decent search tool, although could be improved with a 'new entries since last search' instead of only a 'new entries since last logon' (as sometimes you just go on to check your messages). As a basic member (which is a new thing; until very recently they didn't have levels of membership) all you can do is search profiles. You can no longer initiate messages, and, even if a paid member messages YOU, you can't respond unless you buy a membership. Useless."
He says, "I refuse to pay money to a dating site (especially not one that also has other sources of income (banner ads, etc...). Frumster was really good. Great people, friendly, easy to use, and (if you were seriously looking) full of other people who are seriously looking, and not just fucking around on the Internet. Unfortunetely, their greed got in the way of their stated mission (bringing Jewish singles together) and they've ruined it. Pity.
